Day 21, Saturday March 21st: A beach day and California Family

Saturday morning we walked the beach. We initially were going to try to walk to Trail 6 because Mary had recommended it.

We thought we could walk down the beach a few miles and get to Trail 6, but came to a point that clearly would be difficult to get around at high tide. It was close to high tide and low tide was not going to come until around 17:00...doh.

When we could not pass the point we decided to turn around and walk back up the beach towards the San Clemente Pier.

Surfing at San Clemente

The surfers were out and having a great time.

San Clemente

The pier was right where we left it yesterday.

We walked past the pier to the Clock Tower and then returned to the pier for a slice of pizza.

San Clemente Beach South of the Pier

It was Saturday so the beach near the pier was swarmed with kids, they were all having a great time.

It was getting warm so I took a swim, the water was quite cold refreshing.

We have noticed that on California beaches there are many fat tire ebikes that can carry a surf board. They are everywhere on the beaches and the roads around the beaches.  I had a guy pass us on the scooter, at a stop light I said to him, "that thing is pretty fast".   He replied, "it will go 40 mph". It seems to me that the ebike has greatly benefited the surfing sport.

A walk on San Clemente Beach

When we finished our walk we had gone over 5 miles, we were sun soaked again and went back to camp for showers. It was a very pleasant morning on the beach.

We were picked up about 15:00 by our Uber driver, Mary, and set off for cousin Anne's 60th surprise birthday party, which was about an hour drive. Not only was it a surprise party put on by her husband, Augie, no one but Mary knew that we would be crashing the party.

Queen Anne

"Queen Anne" was a great sport.

Anne

Cousin Anne reminds us so much of Aunt Carol, her mother, because she is her spitting image. Happy Birthday Anne!

Anne, Uncle Earle, Mary and Michael

Uncle Earle and 3 of his 5 kids were there. We last saw Uncle Earle in Minnesota last August, he gets around.

Fisher Family

Many of the Fisher family were present.

Fred, Ronnie, June, Mary, Earle, Anne, Augie, Veronica, Mike, Brian and Family

The Jaquishes had to get in the picture.

We had a really nice time at the party and enjoyed meeting some new relatives and seeing some we had not seen in a very long time.

It was Good Time, with Good Peoples and Good Tacos, Augie brought in a mobile taco bar caterer that was fantastic, we ate too much.  About 20:00 our Uber driver, Mary, whisked us back to San Clemente in about half the time it took to get there with the light traffic.

Sunday we will continue our way up US1 starting from Huntington Beach.

  1. Another full day. We have noticed the beaches here are different than in Florida; no shells to speak of or critters such as jellyfish, starfish, sand dollars…. What a fun birthday party, everyone was so welcoming of us party crashers. Mary was very generous of her time, so thoughtful. Love the Fishers!
